Hi all,

I will be spending my vacations in NYC starting next week.

I am looking for board games stores in the Manhattan area (or somewhere that can easily be reached by public transports).

Does somebody have any suggestions ?

Thanks,

Fabien

P.S. I'm also looking for a gaming group

The Complete Strategist

it's on 33rd street and between Madison and Fifth I believe.

I personally have not been there as they closes quite early.

Here's the link to the NYC guild.
New York City, NY, USA

It will have information about the (Yes, right now there is only one) game store in town, and meet-ups being held.

I hope that helps,
Dustin

I saw pale kings and princes too, Pale warriors, death-pale were they all; They cried—‘La Belle Dame sans Merci Hath thee in thrall!’

Depending on where you're staying you could also order the games you want online and have them sent to e.g. your hotel. It has worked flawless for me in the past using CSI.

There are no good game stores in the city.

Expect to pay over MSRP.

What Paul said is true, in my experience. The Compleat Strategist is very high-priced but will have anything you might want.

Otherwise, you're pretty limited...

What Paul said is untrue. The Strategist has games listed AT MSRP, not above.

There's also an (admittedly small) discount area in the back.

And, the real treasure trove: there's a "From the Attic" area on the right side of the store, about mid-way through, with some old, well out of print games (these are over MSRP, as may be expected). I found a copy of Star Wars: The Queen's Gambit a month or so back.

Bottom Line: you don't have to buy anything, but it's worth a visit.

I went into the Compleat Strategist a month ago. His huge selection of board games are marked at MSRP. He also stocks a lot of RPGs and has space to play in the basement. I definitely would not skip this store.

There's a board gaming group that meets at the Strategist on the 3rd Saturday of every month. They have a folder on Consimworld (33rd St. Chitkickers) where you can get in touch.

Thanks a lot for all your comments.

I guess we will drop by The Compleat Strategist, just to have a look and we'll see if the prices are good or not.

I must say that the swiss franc is pretty strong right now, so the exchange rate is pretty favorable for me. So the prices might not be that bad.

It's always fun to look around in game stores. For the best deal though,do an online order to a friend you will be visiting from Coolstuff or somewhere.

I live in New York and have been to every local gaming store around.

They are all MSRP. Everything in NY is expensive and board games are no different. Put it this way, I place orders from Boards and Bits and some of them are on pre-order for 2 months. I would rather wait the 2 months than pay MSRP + tax in the NYC stores.
