Is this game the german edition of JUMP GATE? According to the game description, it sounds like it is!

And if not: what are the differences?

Why, yes! Yes it is!

And from what I've seen of the draft rules and the art, they've done a great job of re-implementing the main core of the game, and honing it down to be tighter and more of a family strategy game. And it's beautiful too!

I'm quite excited now that I've gotten a sneak peek!

surprise You should have advertised this a bit more. Getting your game published by a mainstream German editor is not something trivial. Congratulations ! It is definitely on my buy list...

Hi,

I have just bought the game in Essen 4 days ago.
In the rules it says that there should be 60 cards in the box,
I have only 57. Is the rules wrong or is there 3 cards missing ?

A little late reply:

I just checked my box for playing at Saturday, and I noticed that I miss the yellow spaceship - I have two green ones although soblue

I also counted the cards and I have 60 cards plus 6 reference cards in various languages. So I'd say you miss 3 cards! Because I just contacted them via eMail for my missing piece, I have their address handy: kundenservice@schmidtspiele.de

I would say "Theme inspired by the TV show, but altered a little to avoid paying royalties". Even the ships look like the Jumpers from the Atlantis series meeple

Right now, Space Mission is only available in Europe through Schmidt Spiele. It will need to be imported to get it in the States at this point.

I'd love to see a US publisher partner with Schmidt Spiele to bring it over here. thumbsup It's a beautiful production.

In the meantime, I'm still selling its not-quite-as-comely older sibling, Jump Gate, via multiple retailers and directly when I'm at cons (such as Con of the North, in St. Paul this winter). ninja

Cheers,
-Matt

So there are (more than cosmetic) differences between the games?

Yes.

The biggest differences: Space Mission does not have the Black Hole mechanic, and it keeps resources at both the planets and in the players collections as hidden information until the final scoring. The scan mechanic and game end trigger are also slightly different because of those first differences I mentioned.

One other difference (that I plan to adopt as I bring out the 3rd Edition of Jump Gate in the very near future): Space Mission replaced the the "Special Actions" with wildcard values on the NavComp cards.

Otherwise, same core game and very similar strategies are used to play them. The changes have made Space Mission easier to teach, especially to newer, younger or more casual gamers.

Thanks for the reminder nudge. And you are right. And I shall write that story out someday.

But due to a bit of some medical stuff currently, it'll be a while I think before I get there.

I'll be sure to add it to this thread though. So if you're subscribed here, you'll see it once I've gotten to it.

Cheers,
-Matt

I'm so sorry! Had I known,I'd have kept my mouth shut or phrased that posting differently.

Anyways, take your time and get well soon. Keeping the spirit up is the most important thing in situations like this.

My thoughts are with you and your family.

All the best!

Okay ... for those still keeping an eye on this thread, I did finally get around to writing about how "Jump Gate" became "Space Mission."

Here's the story on my website: http://www.mwgames.com/?p=2325

{As an aside, my medical issues have gone about as well as I could have hoped since the surprise this past January. After a month in the hospital, I've been doing a 1-month-on-1-month-off schedule for chemo treatments and I've been in remission for a number of months now. August should be my last set of treatments. (Forever, I hope.) }

Thanks for doing this!

Great to hear that, Matt.

Hope you're off the hook by August. Take care!
