Did this game ever get rereleased AND have the same figures (the white viking looking dudes, and the brown warriors)?

Seems like I recall something like that...

sorry, it was orks vs humans


before that, there were about 3 or 4 printings of the vikings and barbarians version.

Yes.

In addition to various international versions of the original Lakeside game, the game was eventually (1990s) remastered by Base Toys, and then by Tomy (and identically by Cadaco).

The Tomy/Cadaco versions had completely different background and art, but the figures were the same models, albeit in slightly different color shades.

The Tomy game pieces were was inferior to those of the Lakeside games - I'm pretty sure they were recasts, as they're smaller and less detailed. The plastic used by Tomy is also cheaper - more "rubbery" than the Lakeside plastic (for the figures and the towers, most noticeably). I'll dig my two sets out and take pics of the pieces side-by-side.
