10th Nov 2011: Title changed from "The Works will be buying games to put in all 300 stores nationwide"

Sit down before you read this ...

Those of you who have been following the thread Cuba on sale in The Works (UK) for £7.99 will already know that the Works are selling proper games for very attractive prices.

But sadly, not in my area (Epsom/Sutton/Croydon sadly) as this map shows:

http://maps.google.com/maps/ms?ie=UTF&msa=0&msid=21419829556...

So following the example set by

, I wrote to Laura at The Works pleading for some goodness to come to Epsom. This is how she has replied...

Quote:
Dear Andrew

I am delighted to receive your email praising us for stocking the strategic games and I thank you. We have indeed received many positive emails from customers in response to this range and I am pleased to inform you that following a very successful trial in selected stores, we will be buying more of these games to put in all 300 The Works stores nationwide.

Expect to see them in all our stores (including the ones you mention below) from the middle of October.

Once again thank you for your email and thank you for supporting The Works.

Best Regards,
Laura

Rejoice!

Sigh. There goes my ban on buying new games.

Well done to all of those who emailed. A perfect example of the difference that each individual can make in this busy, busy world, even to a huge chain like the Works.

What a result! I went to my store in Swindon yesterday and all they had were puzzles and Scene It DVD games.

Great news!

why is this in "hot deals", shouldn't this be in "discussing retailers"?

Only because the original thread was in Hot Deals. I agree it should rightly be under Retailers. Does someone know how to move it there?

If it was in retailers I would have missed this thread. So thanks for posting.... Will be keeping an eye out for future updates in the retailing area

Well done Andrew. A positive e-mail of praise does wonders. I was really pleased with the response that I got from Laura, and I'm even more pleased with the response that you got. Looking forward to what happens, especially since my home town, Wisbech, is getting a branch soon - although Kings Lynn is not too far from me and I've got to know the management pretty well in the last couple of weeks, for some reason whistle

The Works is a major high street chain specialising in discount books. They currently have over 300 stores in the UK.

Ah - so what you're telling me is that in future, instead of selling big piles of their old games cheaply at Essen, Queen will be shipping these same games so that I can buy them from my local Works?

Let's make some predictions regarding the games The Works will have at the end of October - ie which Queen games were released in multiple languages during 2008 to 2010 and didn't sell well.

I'd buy Granada, Samarkand, Fresco or Roma II; or Cable Car - my local games shop could never keep Metro in stock for very long. I bet instead that it'll be Montego Bay, Sultan, Colonia or Discover India - yuck.

I just held off buying Batavia today - on the grounds that I already owned the earlier game on which it was based. I did buy what appeared to be Birmingham New Street's last copy of Notre Dame though.

You should take the credit ... had I not read about your letter and the response it got from Laura, I would never have written to her in the first place.

If this works out for The Works (excuse the pun), then perhaps they will consider widening their net to other games from other publishers. Who knows?

We got the same kind response from Laura. It really is a game-changer. Bear in mind, it will be stock clearance, that is overstock and end of line, so we are going to see some average games. But Royal Palace is a top game, Batavia is excellent, and we all know Cuba is good.

Richard is right too, Essen is going to be a good indicator as to what will appear.

As for celebrating, I think everyone who posted in the old thread should be awarded a microbadge. Make no mistake, BGG users may not have bought all the copies that were sold, but you can bet we had a positive impact. Shop managers report upwards, and retail managers watch their sales reports. Retail is still suffering, so a sudden burst of sales and customer enquiries will have been noted.

I saw Montego Bay in the window of Bham New Street.

And I had them fish out Notre Dame out of their window display for me as it was the last copy.

Okay so I would bet that most of the games will not be that great. but there are lots of games that are actually pretty decent, just not worth picking up at full price. There is definately a whole load of games that might not appeal to me but that would miles better than the usual family games on offer in mainstream shops. I am also quite happy to see a cheap games outlet on the high street so i hope it works out well.

Hopefully this higher profile might pull in a few more into the hobby. How many people/parents might take a chance on an £8 game while they wouldn't risk £30?

The downside is that local game stores may take a hit on the games which The Works are selling, but in the long-run having more people with gaming as a hobby may just outweigh this.

Hopefully - though I also expect a glut of Cubas and Notre Dames in the local charity shops from people who opened the boxes and were appalled at the apparent complexity.

Hoepfully the hit on games shops will be minimal, because these are, in general, middle ranking games a few years old, which either the specialist shops will no longer have in stock, or if they do, almost certainly wouldn't sell them except heavily discounted anyway. Cuba and Notre Dame might be exceptions to this. But whilst I was happy to buy a copy of ND as a present for a friend for £8, I wouldn't have spent £30 or whatever the RRP is anyway, so in that sense the games shop hasn't lost out.

We'll have to keep our eyes out for new posters here saying "I bought this game at the Works and I'm hooked. Where can I get some more like it?" Directing them to our FLGS would I'm sure wipe out any notional feelings of guilt!

Re: [UK] The Works will be buying games to put in all 300 stores nationwide
This is not going to affect FLGS badly, because it is clearance. It's a fixed cycle in any publishing industry. Items are published, they sell, a second print run is made, they sell, a third print run, sales dry up, bang the remaining stock goes to clearance. Or the item dies on its arse from the outset and its all overstock.

Games are just like books. They go through the same process. Nobody thinks booksellers are going bust because The Works sells books on clearance. Booksellers are being killed by Tescos and Amazon. Clearance outlets provide producers with much needed cash and frees up clogged warehouses.

If anything, it may be a warning shot to the UK distributors to start dropping their wholesale prices, and so allow retailers to either make more profit or pass on the reduction to the customer. The fact is, games are pricey here because of one main distributor having a lock on the market. If The Works has found a channel to producers, good luck to them.

My only fear is that this is a flash in the pan. But if The Works starts sourcing more stuff like this, it could really make our hobby accessible.

Dropping a polite email to Laura Lemmon at the Works, thanking her for this change and hoping for more, is an easy way to encourage them to follow this route. https://www.theworks.co.uk/corporate/Buyers#laural

I bet you'd all like to turn up to your job and find a dozen emails thanking you for a good job well done.

Wow, this sounds like potentially excellent news.

It's really strange how this has snowballed and to think I nearly didn't make the initial posting because I thought someone else would already have spotted the offer and publicised it.

I strongly suspect that The Works current stock has come from a back inventory clearout at that very distributor.

Yes, which means that it's either a one-off or the new owners are changing things.

But The Works might find more producers ready to clear English language stock. If The Works finds this a profitable line, they may keep following it, and we could see older Mayfair or Z-man titles coming through. Clementoni, Ystari, Ravensburger are others doing their own English editions. Ye ghods, what if we got the Nexus stock clearance?? Letters from Whitechapel for under a tenner?

Well I have been following this thread and all I can say is that my local branch of the works still has none of the games being posted here. I even phoned the branch asking if they had one of the games listed and all I got was, " No, bye.."..literally..so I don`t hold out much hope. To me the works have always been very hit or miss

The most amazing thing about this is that they are not expansions to games! whistle

In my experience when I pick up a book in The Works, it turns out to be book six in a series, and they don't have the previous five. cry

All joking aside, I am really pleased they are stocking these games and will send an email to Laura, to thank her.
