Historical Setup The Battle of Cunaxa was the attempt by Cyrus to seize the Persian throne held by his brother Artaxerxes. You'll find the details on page 107 of Lost Battles by Philip Sabin. Cyrus led an army that had a powerful Greek Heavy Infantry contingent. His brother outnumbered him but his army is of far lesser quality.
Artaxerxes Turn 2FV=51 Command=5+2 Artaxerxes advances hoping to defeat the Greeks before their Veteran Hoplites get into action. He outnumbers and outflanks the enemy. His Light Cavalry immediately threatens the left flank of the Greeks. In the center Artaxerxes personally leads his cavalry attacking his brother. They strike hard and shatter the Greek center. Cyrus fails to rally his troops and only just survives his brothers ferocious attack. This is just the start Artaxerxes needed. The Scythed Chariots fail to make any headway against the Hoplites and on the left flank the Veteran Cavalry advances to take on the Greek Light Cavalry.
Cyrus Turn 2FV=66 Command=6+3 Cyrus is desperate to turn around the disaster in the center. He still believes he can win the battle. He manages to escape the melee into the midst of his Veteran Hoplites. Veteran light infantry move across Cyrus's rear to support the Levy Infantry now exposed to the Persian Cavalry. The rest of the Greek Hoplites advance to join Cyrus and make the phalanx even more formidable, meanwhile to their right the Persian Heavy horse are being charged by Light Cavalry to little effect.
Artaxerxes Turn 3FV=51 Command=5+4 Artaxerxes personally leads his cavalry forward again and charges the Levy Troops who are also hit from the flank, they take damage but survive. Instead of bringing up his supporting Light Infantry he has ordered them to remain behind in anticipation that the Greek Hoplites will advance, so they can take them in the flank. This order will cost him the battle! Tissaphernes with his Veteran Cavalry on the left flank has driven off the enemy horse.
Cyrus Turn 3FV=58 Command=5+1 At this point I made a dumb rules error as per this rules question and it was a game breaker. I will possibly reset the battle at this point and add it to this post at a later stage. In the meantime here is a link to a nice description of the battle:
