I am heading down to fort lauderdale for vacation from canada and was wondering if there was any nicely priced game stores down there. That way i can take advantage of the cheaper games and not lose money paying fedex amd UPS a brokearge fee worth the price of one game.

Thanks

The short answer is no, there aren't any. There are a pair that I considder to have fairly good stock but they deal in a lot of other things and the one that is the better store is not the nice one to visit.

The better store to visit is Past, Present, Future:

http://maps.google.com/maps?q=4900+N+university+drive+Sunris...

Its more of a comic book shop than anything else but under previous management it was called Comic and Game Exchange so that should tell you that the store was split kind of evenly. Plesent store, nice people, they have several shelves filled with some of the more popular Eurogames. If you like RPG's that where they really shine with a massive selection and a huge bargain bin for them on top of that.

The store with the bigger selection is Dragon's Lair:

http://maps.google.com/maps?q=5100+S+SR+7+Davie,+Florida&spn...

They have a fairly extensive selection of pretty much every game you can think of. It's also in a mildew filled, gamer funk smelling, rat hole. The staff isn't bad, but the people who are around the store are not pleasent.

Neither store offers any kind of discount on games so expect to pay full price.

There's one more I should mention more as a warning: Tate's. It's run by the most vile comic book store owner I have ever had the misfortune of meeting. I personally saw him pressing opening packs of collectable figures in another store to locate the rare figures and put the others back. He has directly ripped off at least two of my friends. He does pretty much every wrong, nasty thing that someone in the collectable industry can do and I avoid his store like they're providing free samples of the bubonic plague.

Ok, it's a funky smelling place and it's in a bad area of town, but the people there are not that bad. The prices are a little steep, but you can make a lot of money in the Hard Rock Casino across the street playing poker, so then you can afford to buy whatever you want.

Dragons Lair suffers from a previous bad rep,the store is much cleaner than it was when that rep was garnered, and the stock is CLEAN. The selection is also the widest.

PPF has little except the newest, and a lot of dead RPGs, and the staff leaves much to be desired since the changes about 6 months ago.

Tates is a small (no, Tiny) place in a seperate bay from the large and better-stocked/maintained comic shop of the same name/owner that keeps only the newest stuff, mostly to counter PPF down the street.

I think 50% of the bad vibes from Dragon Lair comes from where it's located. It's a scummy sight from the outside and there are some seedy places nearby. Once you get inside, though, the owner is pleasant and there is a wide selection of euros, wargames, ccgs and rpgs. The prices were not deeply discounted, but they were often less than list.

I have no idea of any games you play or anyone. I live in North Lauderdale FL. Why you not come next month and take beer with me.

What a difference 9 years can make for the Dragon's Lair, which is now called Adventure Game Store.

The owner bugged out that neighborhood years ago after a hurricane trashed the place. The new digs (6895 Stirling Rd, Davie, FL 33314) are nice, clean and spacious with a wide screen TV and private conference table in the back. I think you can see some of that stuff on their FB page. https://www.facebook.com/AdventureGameStore

Even cooler, the middle row of shelving is Ikea stuff on wheels. So you can roll the stuff across the wood laminate floor to make more room for tournaments or turn the shelves into room dividers. That has made it possible to have my RPGs go on without the visual distraction of the wargame that happening on the other side of the shelves.

As for "steep," I've been with that store through thick and thin these years and AGS has always been strictly retail, never inflated.

So if you think retail is "steep," talk to the game companies. If I'm going to buy from a store that I like and offers plenty of good FREE gaming space, then I prefer to pay retail to help them keep the lights on and the AC running.

As a side note: The store set down rules ages ago about the gamer stereotype. Make sure you've applied your Right Guard before you step inside.

Cool Stuff Games is in Hollywood. Not too far. This is where a lot of people meet, myself included. This is the one Tom Vasel hosts meetups at.

TATES is in Lauderhill. It's a popular spot as well, but less so for board games (mostly TCGs).

Those are probably the two most popular ones.

I would recommend making the trip up to Cool Stuff when you can. You can find out when there will be board game meetups from the link I posted above, or you can join our meetup group, here on Meetup.com.

I've only been once, but I had a less-than-pleasant experience with Past, Present, Future.

This is a no brainer for shopping purposes, as mentioned already, CSI in Hollywood. The store has made strides in stocking the latest hotness but you can order anything off the CSI website and have it shipped to the South Florida store for free, just allow about 1 week for the store-to-store transfer (ie: do it in advance of your trip).

I'm down from NJ for business and stopped by here.

It's a really nice space. Great selection, friendly owner. They do a lot of cool outreach and events too.

Thanks for the recommendation.

HI all, found this old thread and wonder if there are any updates? Heading this way in a few weeks and even though we (Wife and I )travel with a few games would love to find a shop with a lending library. Play a few we know pick up something we don't.

What suggestions would you have?
