Next month I will be travelling to France. I will spend about 4 days each in both Paris and Bordeaux. Can anybody recommend good game stores in either of these cities? My intent is to search for boardgames that are difficult to find in the U.S. Also, any advice on what games to look for?

I never was there by myself but it seems to that there is a great range of choice:

JEUX DESCARTES
6, RUE MEISSONIER M° WAGRAM
75017 PARIS

they have a homepage: http://www.descartes-editeur.com/

I hope this info is of some use for you.

The following list should meet your needs :

In Paris :

Relais Descartes
52 r Montmartre
75002 PARIS

Jeux Descartes
6 r Meissonier
75017 PARIS

Jeux Descartes
39 bd Pasteur
75015 PARIS

Starplayer
3 r Dante
75005 PARIS

Oeuf Cube
24 r Linné
75005 Paris

In Bordeaux :

Jeux Descartes
162 rue Sainte Catherine
33000 Bordeaux

About the games, I don't really know what is difficult to find in the US but if I had to pick the latest best European games, there would be :
1/ Dungeon Twister and its extensions - not my taste, but a lot of people like it
2/ Himalaya (French game) - not tried
3/ Ys (French game) - not tried
4/ Niagara (German game) - not tried
5/ Im schatten der Kaiser (German game) - a good pick if you liked Amun-Re
6/ Palazzo (German game) - Knizia stakes game but I personnaly disliked it
7/ Medici (German game) - not tried
8/ Fils de Samarande (French adaptation of a german game) - not tried
9/ Diamant (French/German game) - not tried

If you're looking for older french games :
Have a look here : http://www.faidutti.com/

Another very good adress (but you'll need to speak french) :
www.trictrac.net

Finally, i'm travelling to the US in 3 days time (absolutely true).
I'm spending 6 days in San Francisco and 5 in LA.
I'd ask exactly the same questions as you did :
1/ Where are the shops ?
2/ What is there that cannot be found in France / Europe ?

Regards,

A couple of others have mentioned the Jeux Descartes stores. There are several of them, but I prefer the one at 6, rue Meissonier.

If it still exists, it might also be worthwhile to stop at OYA, a true game cafe at 25, rue de la Reine Blanche. The last time I visited OYA, in 2003, they had games stacked to the ceiling, and some of them were for sale. In fact, when I was there, they had just received a sizable shipment of out-of-print RoboRally games, but they were hiding them in the back room...
