Hmmmmm....buy yet another game that will go into my growing pile of perpetually unplayed games or help those in need? Oh fine!! angry thumbsup

I don't mean to thin the BGG pot but I'd like to enter a quick plug here for the Humane Society who are collecting funds to help animals in need in the aftermath too:

http://www.hsus.org/

I went through hurricane Andrew in '92 and saw many lost and wandering pets. Ended up adopting one who is still with me today.

If you can afford to help both organizations out, please do so. Every little bit helps.

As Aldie indicated in a posting...as of August there were 67037 Total Registered Users on BGG.

It would be an admirable goal for all of us to shoot for $1 for every user ever registered on BGG. I think that's possible.
I think $50,000 is doable...

Should have $25 or $30,000 by the end of the weekend!

Re: GeekGold for Katrina Relief
Way to go, Aldie! This is a great way for us Geeks to contribute.

But I'm an even bigger geek: I have an Amateur Radio license. For years, it was just a hobby, but in 1992 it became a humanitarian tool. I spent two weeks on the island of Kauai after Hurricane Iniki, only a category three storm with 130 mph winds, did much of the same kind of damage Katrina did the Gulf Coast.

More info: http://homepage.mac.com/gpool/portfolio/writing/iniki.html

I was a Red Cross volunteer, but we used Amateur Radio to connect the shelters across the island. It took us a week for the government operations to get turned over to the American Red Cross, but rest assured that in Louisiana, Mississippi, and Alabama there are a bunch of Amateur Radio operators at Red Cross shelters helping communicate back to a main staging area for supplies.

And in their spare time, they are probably helping to gather outgoing welfare traffic from those shelter folks who can't pick up a phone and contact worried family members.

Here's a great big pat on the back for all the hams along the Gulf Coast who've helped to save lives. I live in California, but I know you'll do the same for us when The Big One hits.

Re: GeekGold for Katrina Relief
In addition to this donation, my wife and I regularly donate blood to the Bonfils Blood Center, which immediately flew blood supplies to the southeast. We also donated some cash to our grandkids for the relief funds being collected by their school.

Our daughter's name happens to be Katrina. Before the hurricane hit land, the idea was humorous that it was "named after our daughter." Of course, there is no humor in it now, but she says everyone she works with in her new job certainly knows her name.

I think the red cross symbol on the top right is a bit distracting and misplaced, as there are too many icons on top.

Maybe it would best be moved to the bottom, along the lines of "Bgg supporter", there could be a rectangle below it, in similar colours, with wording like "Katrina Supporter" etc.
I like it where it is....

I can't give blood in the US.....I might suffer from Mad Cow....

Sad but true...

When I heard the learn’d astronomer; When the proofs, the figures, were ranged in columns before me; When I was shown the charts and the diagrams, to add, divide, and measure them; When I, sitting, heard the astronomer, where he lectured with

Re: GeekGold for Katrina Relief
Once again this shows you the generosity of people.

This is simply a great idea, and it will help many people. People who could be you and me.

I don’t know what I would do if I was in the situation where I lost everything and did not have a place to stay or somewhere to go.

The added benefit to be able to donate with "geeks" is a plus. It goes to show you how great gamers are and how tight knit of a community we have!

It really opened my eyes when I saw the 20k+ total and rising on the stats.

I donated as much as I could muster, and will be donating more soon.

I bow to everyone who has helped make this a success and to Aldie for setting up such a great program for such a great cause.

Keep those donations coming in!

The Geek? Yes, it's a good site. But - ah! You should have seen it before the rebranding! It was legible and a joy to read! All gone now, sadly, and so (mostly) am I because of it ...

I'm sorry, I cannot read this site regularly while the intense white background is in effect. I have eye health issues, and this is painful. I'll still make brief visits, largely for trades and rules questions, but my socializing here is done for now

I saw the following headline on my BBC newsfeed:

"Gamers rally for Katrina support". I thought it was about BGG, but it's not:

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/technology/4208038.stm

They're not the only gamers rallying! Way to go, Geeks!

Yes, if you haven't specified a backup funding source, eg atm or credit card. I learned this recently, the hard way!

Re: GeekGold for Katrina Relief
angry Here's the 'response' that I finally got from "PayScam" QUOTE:
'' Dear Robert Wesley,

Thank you for contacting PayPal. We apologize for the delay in
responding
to your email.

Regarding your concern, in withdrawing funds, I can see that you were
trying to send money, instead of the send money tab, you would have to
click on the withdraw tab under request money. Also, you would have to
add
a bank account to your PayPal account for you to withdraw the funds
from
your PayPal balance. There are several options to withdraw funds from
your
PayPal account.

If you have a bank account linked to your PayPal account, then it is
easy
to withdraw the funds directly to your bank account by clicking on the
"Withdraw" tab from the "My Account" page.

If you do not have a bank account linked to your PayPal account, then
it is
easy to add it by clicking on the "Profile" tab from the "My Account"
page.

You may also withdraw funds via the PayPal Debit Card or via check. For
further information, you can go the PayPal website and click on the
"Help"
link in the upper right corner of any page and then click on
"Withdrawing
Funds" from the category list.
You can withdraw funds by requesting an electronic transfer to your
bank
account or by requesting a check. Please note that to withdraw funds,
you
must confirm your primary email address.

Electronic Transfer:

· Withdrawal by electronic transfer to bank account takes 3 to 4
business days to complete

· There is no charge by PayPal for an electronic transfer

Checks:

· Check withdrawal process takes one to two weeks to complete

· A $1.50 processing fee for each check withdrawal

To withdraw funds from your PayPal account:

1. Log in to your account at https://www.paypal.com/ by entering
your
email address and password into the Member Log In box.

2. Click "Withdraw".

3. Choose your withdraw options from the list and follow the
directions.

Please Note:

· PayPal ATM/Debit Cards can be used at any ATM worldwide with the
Cirrus/Maestro logo. To withdraw cash at an ATM, select "Checking
Account".
Withdrawals are subject to the daily ATM withdrawal limit.

· There is no option to withdraw funds to a credit card, as that
is
not supported by the credit card companies

If you have any further questions, please feel free to contact us
again.

Sincerely,
Edgar

gee, and they WONDER 'why' it is that they are so easily despised AND loathed by many!?!? I strongly urge anyone who desires so, to send them a scathing 'reply'('scathing' I tell ya!) to THIS! I seriously doubt that they 'thanked' ME for my initial inquiry! Yet, when I tried ALL of their 'methods' for anything, I always got a ''not possible'' for my efforts!

I think something is wrong... all you need to do is click on the PayPal logo from this page:
http://www.boardgamegeek.com/disasterfundraiser.php

and it will take you to paypal. If you have an account, just fill out the amount field, your username, and password. Then press submit, and verify.

That should be it... Am I missing something?

Re: GeekGold for Katrina Relief
Yes, THEY 'insist' that I HAVE to 'link' a ''Bank Account'' to them before I can 'do' anything! And I'm never going to, while I have some 'funds' in an ''account'' already for which I've been trying to have that 'donated', with NOTHING but their usual line of B.S. for that! As that last 'note' in the previous 'Post' of mine shows, I'm not the only 'one' affected by their asinine 'approaches'!
