UPDATE July 8, 2008:

Our winner is shawn_low! Congratulations!

His name was selected by a Geekpoll which asked people to choose a number from 1 to 50. The number 42 won the poll, and when you click on the tip figure for this message, Shawn is the 42nd contributor listed.

The poll: http://www.boardgamegeek.com/thread/324001

And thumbsdown to the Hasborg for not releasing the promised game... which rumor suggests was Titan, of all things!

_________________________________________________________________________

Original message:

Since there seems to be great interest and speculation regarding the Secret "old school reprint" coming from (H-WOTC) Avalon Hill...

bagbag Let the GeekGold Pool begin! bagbag

Here is how it works:
1) To enter the Pool, tip this message 1 GG , and
2) Post a reply to this message stating what the surprise (?) reprint will be.

The person who correctly names the HAH reprint game will receive a gift of GG equal to the GG tips made to this message.

If there is more than winner, the earliest guesser will receive the largest share of GG with subsequent guessers receiving a lesser amount of the Pool (proportions to be determined later based on the total number of entries and number of correct guessers).

You may only name one game - if you select more than one, only your first selection will count. You can name a game already selected by someone else. Finally, no one will be permitted to enter the Pool once the secret game is finally announced (but any late tippers will be refunded).

Enjoy! I'll start things off with a long-shot guess:

$quander - "If you're a born loser, you'll win the game!"

I'll say Dune (though this is probably just wishful thinking).

H:RvC is more likely particularly as I have just reacquired it!

Re: WIN GG - new Avalon Hill teaser - GeekGold POOL!
Alas, I have no geekgold. I am still going to make a guess. If someone wants to tip for me, I'll share any winnings.

I'm going to guess devil Dune devil

Why:

1) Dune sells
2) The only other Dune board game was by Parker Brothers (also owned by Hasborg)
3) Definitely old school. Hannibal vs. Carthage was 1996 for crying out loud.
4) AH needs a heavier game in their collection but Hasborg probably makes sure they don't encroach on the Hasbro games and AH looks to be avoiding overlap with their current product line aside from Axis and Allies.

Why Not:

They might have to relicense rights to the Dune properties.
Possibly too complex for their tastes

Edit: I see there is an entry for Dune now. Yes, I really did take over an hour and a half to hit submit

A bit of a long shot, but how about 1830? Train games seem to be all the rage greentrain and AH are sitting on one of the best. Granted it's a mite complex so this is probably wishful thinking, but you never know ...

I'll say Win, Place & Show.

It has broader appeal than the other titles listed (with the possible exception of Rail Baron) and would fit in pretty well with the current line of WOTC AH games.

oooo, now this is fun...

Can't be Titan--from what I know Trampier is still MIA.

Dune? hmm maybe. It is a great game, but it is also rife with rule interpretation problems.

I'd love it to be Hannibal--I have a copy, but the hobby is sorely in need of a entry-level card driven game.

But, my guess is Gunslinger!

OK, I'll jump in with one that has not been mentioned yet.

Merchant of Venus

Old school, space exploration genre, alien cultures, markets and trading, and offers opportunities for cool bits.

You're applying general public accessibility/knowledge to the situation here, and it doesn't work that way. Just because the general gaming public doesn't know where he is doesn't mean Hasbro/AH doesn't. It could very well go down that Hasbro/AH found him and worked a deal out a while ago (when you think about it, how much of Hasbro's dealing is accessible to the general public, regardless). I recall reading that someone on BGG or another gaming site knew where he was through someone else, Trampier had just been avoiding/ignoring attempts to contact him. However, when you get a rep from a multi million dollar game and toy company contacting you and probably essentially saying "we want to reprint your game, you don't have to do anything or help us or come out into the public eye again for us to do it, and we'll just mail you a royalty check every month" - that can be a pretty sweet deal and there's not a single reason any of "us" even have to know where he is. There are even other ways around it - if they have McAllister (the other designer) on board and have made repeated good faith attempts to contact Trampier and give him his fair share and been ignored, there's probably precedent to go ahead anyway and simply keep Trampier's royalties in esgrow in case he ever decides to come forward, especially since the old AH probably had some type of an open ended agreement to reprint the original game as long as they saw fit regardless of how MIA Trampier choses to be.

Still, that said, I am totally with you that this is the biggest block and argument against it being Titan.

Rail Baron gets my vote. Not the one I'd like to see but probably the smartest move for Avalon Hill.
