So my kindergarten-aged son, my someday-soon brother-in-law, and I settled down for a couple of rounds of Flashpoint Fire Rescue (the family version).

For those that wonder if a 5 year old can handle the game, I’ll say this - My son adores this game, he requests it and he knows the family rules all too well.

For example, if I miss a POI roll after a completed rescue, he’ll remind me. If we suggest someone other than him starts first, he’ll hold up the rules and say “But the rules say the youngest player starts first, and that’s me, Daddy.” So apparently, I’m raising a rules lawyer.

So if it isn’t Qwirkle, Kids of Carcassonne, Blokus or Pitchcar, then it’s playing Flash Point Fire Rescue.

After a number of previous successful rescues on either side of the basic game using the family rules, my son suggested “let’s play with the new map, Daddy”, by which he meant the Flashpoint, Fire Rescue Urban Structures map, which we had yet to try.

Here’s a tip to share after a couple of rounds with the high-rise: DO NOT PLAY THE HIGH RISE MAP WITH THE FAMILY RULES, AND THREE PLAYERS IS ALSO DICEY AT BEST.

After a couple of rounds on the high rise, my humble take is without the use of the driver/operator for the fire engine AND without the structural engineer for repairs, the high rise map game is an exercise in wall damage futility.

Additionally, the elevator use slowed us down too much, and even with a one-man shuttle of victims to another to the elevator with a third person on fire duty, the damage counters overwhelmed us quickly.

However, after learning our lesson with the high rise, we had a GREAT time with the family rules on the Brownstone side of the board.

The game was fierce – we narrowly won on both fronts – we saved seven people (one pet), and got all fire fighters clear of the building – with three casualties and only one damage counter left.

Only one knock down (my guy – had a smoke-turn-into-fire on top of me and an unfortunate victim before I could get out of the way)

Special thanks to the designers and those on Kickstarter that helped make this game possible!

It's possible to win with 2 players and no driver on the high rise...my son and I beat it fairly comfortably our first time...since then I've lost this board every time (6 or so times) . Probably our favorite board as the other boards usually don't give us to great a problem, although we still enjoy them!

I haven't played the High Rise with family rules before, but I can imagine it would be more difficult without the option of using the fire truck's ladder. That can be a real lifesaver sometimes. So you might want to "cheat" a little bit and include the fire truck rules. This includes:

1. Driving the truck around. 2AP per change in facing.
2. Using the ladder. 2AP to move between ground and fire floor.
3. Using the deck gun - very situational, when it costs 4AP to fire blindly.
4. Using the fire truck as an ambulance

I think this might be more manageable, while still challenging. On the downside, you don't have specialists. On the upside, you also don't have to deal with hot spots or hazmats. The deck gun is available to you, but not the Driver/Operator, so it becomes a sort of desperation play when the fire spreads beyond control.

The High Rise is supposed to be the most challenging map. So I am glad you are having so much trouble with it. laugh

Are you supposed to clear the firefighters out to win?

No. But it is a house variant we use to make it a little more fun...
