Going to LA this weekend. Can anyone recommend a good local game store?

Yeah if you really need to pick up a game and Aero doesn't have it, Game Empire is a possibility. However, with LA traffic it will take you an hour each way at least from Santa Monica, more if you try to do it during rush hour. That said, if you make an afternoon of it, could be worth the time.

I think there are some store north in the valley too, but you run into the same problem of traffic since that's one of the busiest roads in america (405) and is a solid mess for hours every day.

Hrm, not really. I lived in Santa Monica for 6 years and never found one.

Aero Hobbies (http://www.aerohobbiesgames.com/) has a (relatively) small selection and has tables but seems to mostly cater to Magic and model games (Warhammer, etc). The customer service isn't so hot, with employees generally gaming themselves and not very willing to help out boardgamers; their stock is disorganized. If they actually have (and can find) even 25% of what's on their list of board games on their website, I'd be amazed.

I guess if that's what you're looking for, well, then Aero is the place.

It's honestly the only game store I ever encountered in Santa Monica / Hollywood.

They are pretty disorganized and yeah, most of their business is GW stuff, but I have found 2/3 of the staff incredibly awesome and ready to help. Every once in a while I go get stuff there instead, as the owner and one of the cashiers are two of the most enthusiastic people there.
The owner even had out some kickstarter project out for public use not because he would make any money whatsoever, but because a local gamer and customer came up with the game.

The SoCalGamers group (http://socalgamers.info/) is meeting this Saturday at Game Empire from 10am-11pm if that makes the drive any more worthwhile.

The only game store on the Westside is Aero Hobbies. They have some selection and do allow pickup games during the day. There is also the LA Games group that meets there Friday nights.

For gaming in the area there are other groups to seek out with more space in the area.
