Anyone know of a good place to play a casual game of either Magic or a random board game. Would quite like to get to know some more games and people in the community. Also brand new to BGG and kind of computer illiterate so any tips etc would be appriciated.

If you can make it to the City of London you are more than welcome to come to London on board.

Colchester has a monthly games club that I highly recommend (I miss those guys since moving to Wiltshire! lol).

This thread will give you info.

Say that Sam/Bifford sent you and expect a good welcome!

They have a mailing list also so i'm still (sort of) in contact with them.

Enjoy!

"When? Second Friday every month from 7PM until around 2AM

Where? Kings Cafe which is situated above Aldi, 86 London Road, Lexden, CO3 9DW. Please use the car park spaces at the back of the car park, which are labelled Kingsland Church. We are often in one of the meeting rooms out the back. When this is the case there is a sign on the door of the main cafe.

Who? All welcome. We get 15-20 along each month in total with people arriving and leaving at different times.

What? All sorts of games but more Eurogames than anything else.

Cost? Free

Also of note, though slightly different from what you asked about:

Seaxe and Sorcery is a RPG and LARP group based in East Tilbury, so just outside the M25 corridor into Essex. I am webmaster for them and when I lived in Essex a weekly attendee and sometime GM.

Each Monday night they hold a Tabletop RPG evening from 8-11pm and while mostly this is RPG they do occasionally have boardgames come in for a go and you could quite easily organise a side-night of such with them. Also I wouldn't be surprised if some of the folks have Magic: The Gathering (I have it but only on the XBOX360!) so no doubt you could organise a session outside of those Monday nights.

Brilliant people, great RPGs and great LARP

forum: http://www.seaxeandsorcery.co.uk/forum/ (PM me with your user name if you join and I'll get your account activated asap)

Also, if you have Magic on the XBOX feel free to Friend me "BiffordYoungest" (details in my profile) and we can play against each other sometime!

If you are on the Fenchurch Street line, Southend on Sea has a board game club on Thursday nights that is located right by the Southend Central railway station.

Essex is getting quite well served by board games groups. There are groups in Chelmsford (ask me for details), Colchester, Southend, Rayleigh and Upminster at least. I'm pretty sure all are positively welcoming new people.

A good opportunity, but a little time to wait, are the Essex Games Days, next in July, I help run, near Chelmsford to which people from some other of those clubs are likely to attend.

Whereabouts are you, to try to suggest what's best?

You also note FLGS. Unfortunately Lingards Games in Colchester is no more. There's a shop in Rayleigh I hear good things about. And Greenwich has Compendium.

Thanks everyone for getting back to me so quickly. I live in South Ockendon and commute to bow for work so I can probably get to most of the meet ups you guys have recommended. I have played a lot of Magic but really would love to branch out and have always been interested in RPG's but have never really had occation to get involved. Im not sure what LARP's are(sorry Im a bit of a newbie)

Any more suggestions would be welcome, Ill check out the ones you have said.

Thanks again.

LARP = Live Action Role Play.

Basically RPG but rather than sitting around a table roleplaying you get into costume, take on your character and actually role play everything from sword fighting to magic social combat etc etc and make loads of friends along the way.

Check out the gallery on the seaxe website or type LARP into your search engine. Also my youtube videos all available http://www.youtube.com/user/JesterMinnitLARP

I recommend the "Spirit barrier" video first and formost. You'll see some very good roleplay and some very bad roleplay all right there in the one video!! heheeh

And Welcome to BGG/RPGgeek also

Sam

The Shop in Rayleigh is GamerzNexus http://www.gamerznexus.co.uk/

Different games on different nights:

Boardgames on Monday - that's when I go
MtG on Tuesday and Friday
RPG on Thursday

Special events happen on Saturdays (and sometime bank holidays)

The shop is just across the road from Rayleigh station. There are a few parking spaces on the forecourt and on street parking up the hill (Castle Drive and Mount Avenue) is possible after mid-afternoon (restricted until 3pm to stop the commuters using it)

(Assuming you're referring to Rayleigh)

The main evening session starts at about 5.30 - but there may well be some boardgamers there well before then. We'll be there at least until 10, usually nearer 11.

I'll give a traffic warning: the A127 will be very busy at that time, especially with those trying to escape the problems on the A13. Allow at least 45 minutes from S. Ockendon rather than the 25 that you might otherwise expect.

The Phoenix Games club meets every Thursday in Plaistow, east London. There's at least a couple of tables of board games going on each week. More details are on our club website at http://www.phoenixgamesclub.org.uk, or I'm happy to answer questions on PM.
