Found myself driving through Whitby yesterday and was sure we passed a games shop with Ticket To Ride in particular noticeable in the window. Couldn't get parked to nip back and take a look, and have no idea of its name - can't find a website for it either.
Anyone know of this shop? If so, worth a visit?
Cheers,
Craig

Whitby Chess & Games, apparently.
Their website appears to be down at the minute.
Funnily enough, my father mentioned them to me just last weekend when we were making plans to visit the area.

I've went there last summer, not specifically for that shop though. It looks good from the outside but not much of anything really. They had all the variations of carcassonne and settlers but that's about it. At least 50% of the shop is deluxe chess sets in different themes (you know the ones that cost around £200 or so and look like wizards), they also have lots of normal playing cards, marbles, dominoes. I didn't get anything when I went.
If you're going to Whitby pop in but I wouldn't make a special trip just for that shop.
** Disclamer: Its been about 8 months since I've been, they may have changed stock since then **

- I popped into this shop while on holiday last week, and it's still as KT describes - great if you're after a Carcassonne expansion or Settlers, not much good for anything else.

- Thanks everyone for your comments - we were Just in the area visiting family, but intend to return in the summer to Robin Hood's Bay and might drop into the shop to heck it out...cheers!

Hi Peter,
My wife and I operate the game shop in Whitby, North Yorkshire.I take note of your comments and , because a customer made me aware of this website only yesterday,I would like to make the following points in our defense.
We have been operating this shop for fifteen years and enjoyed every minute. Our aim has always been to be a Traditional Games Shop with a broad
appeal to the many varied visitors we welcome into Whitby. Chess,backgammon,mah-jong,dominoes (Double 6's-9's-12's-15's) and playing cards have always been the backbone of our business to which we add the popular family games which have remained popular over the years - Scrabble,Monopoly,Pass the Pig, 'Owsthat etc.Only over the passed couple of years have we ventured into "Geek" game area and have found it very interesting but a little confusing. You have obviously visited us in this period and, therefore, cannot disagree with your comments. However, we have tried to progress and extend our range ,mainly thanks to customers who suggest games to us which we then search out. We are learning all the time and hope that if you are in Whitby again, you will make yourself known to us so we can learn from you.
Thanks again for the mention,
John.

It's always good to hear from retailers, John. Thanks for the explanation and I hope you are brave enough to continue your foray into 'geek' games (personally, I don't mind the label, but a few sensitive souls might prefer 'strategy' games
).
We visit Whitby on a pretty regular basis, and I will definitely pop in next time I'm up in North Yorks.

- I'm pretty sure my wife and I called into the shop while on holiday a year or so ago. I was very impressed to see a Traditional Games Shop stocking a few of 'my' games. I wish you all the best and hope that you may continue to stock some of these games, alongside the more well known and popular ones.

- Does anyone know if this shop is still open? We'll be back at Robin Hood Bay this weekend, and want to know if it's worth a pop in?

Hello,
A bit late for you now but I wanted to say that I visited this shop over the Easter weekend 2014 and it is worth popping in if you are in Whitby.

Spending a week in Whitby on my holiday and like to visit this little shop. I think they have a good selection for a non-specialist in geeky games. Good selection including ticket to ride and expansions, settlers of catan, Carcassone, walking dead board games, arkham horror and also a touch of evil and my personal favourite, last night on earth. Plenty of accessories too including dice, shaker cups and rolling trays etc. My wifey purchased a couple of dice games and a great selection of traditional games including risk, great range of scrabble and accessories, chess sets and boards.
Would give this shop a thumbs up and if your in the area make the effort to pay a visit. You will find plenty of places close by for a cup of tea to whilst you review your purchases.

I also popped in during my summer holiday and got talking to John. He admitted that he still a bit new to Eurogames, but said he is always happy to order products in on request. However, he also said he has absolutely NO custom from local gamers, and is entirely dependent on the tourist crowd which I find very sad.
EDIT - I find the situation sad, not the tourists. Although having met some of them...
I know there are gaming groups in Scarborough and elsewhere in North Yorkshire - why are you guys not supporting a friendly local shop?

I can't understand why they would be sad. I mean - Whitby is not exactly Las Vegas or Miami or whatever, but it's a pleasant enough place for a holiday I'm sure.

- I Googled "Game shops in Whitby" this morning and this thread was top of the list. I'm on my way to Whitby very shortly with my Girls and was hoping to find something. And I did. I will definitely have a look in today. I'm new to this group and totally new to Gaming of this kind. (I'm a console gamer at heart... Sorry!) But!! I have a group now, of which myself and a friend have organised, there's seven of us with a guaranteed four each fortnight. We are starting with D&d 3.5 but are also looking at board and deck-build game. This group has opened my eyes to the wonders of "Geek Gaming" and at 33 years old, I can now hold my head high and enjoy that which I couldn't as a youth due to peer pressure.

I visited the "just games" shop in Whitby yesterday. Great little store with many recent top big box games. Examples were blood rage, Fury of Dracula, ticket to ride and expansion maps, carcassone, Terra Mystica , the brand new Osprey release of escape from Colditz...and lots more!.
We are in Yorkshire for a weeks family holiday and I don't have a " buying board games" budget with me, unfortunately. ( we have a selection of games with us).
What a beautiful and amazing place Whitby is!, very pleasantly surprised. We hit lucky visiting on Halloween with lots of people dressed in gothic costumes to honour Dracula/Bram Stoker.
Edit:
And now I have better internet connection:
