This one has some GREAT photos (probably from last year) that really give you a feel for "being there". Also, there is downloadable .pdf file of all the new releases... you can use it as a shopping checklist!

The top games - as voted by attenders:

Attenders that voted rated their favorite games of the show. The lower the numerical score, the more popular the game (a 1.5 is more popular than a 5.0) Here is the final list:

New: fairplay "best in show" as a geeklist with a link to the fairplay website:

Our Finnish friend has uploaded his photos:

This next one works a little differently from the rest... you need to use the "back" "main" "next" function at the top of the page. On the first page you see: "« MT3.2 | Main | Sunriver Games: Havoc " Click on "Sunriver Games: Havoc" and it will take you to the next page. Follow the same routine on each page when you are done reading. There are a good number of reviews! Keep clicking on the "next" game at the top...

Nothing from Essen yet, but it's promised and it should be interesting to see since it's going to be from a kid's point of view:

Can we pin this to the top? I know I'll be reading daily reports and drooling like a rabid dog (the used games section is INCREDIBLE!!).

Am already making plans for attending in 2006...

And thank God for mates in Germany who will be helping me pick up the hard to find game (can you say AoS San Francisco Expansion?).

I have followed Frank Kulkmann's reports for some years. This year's has already started at
http://www.solicitor.de/gamebox/specials/messe/essen05/essen...

Frank always includes plenty of photos too, which helps to bring it to life for those of us unable to get there. cry

Is it me, or did those OltreMare figs look a lot like Pirates of the Spanish Main ships? And the board, etc is nicely done.

Things are looking nice over there. Mesopotamamia appears to have found another connection style for a hexagon. Looks appealing, hope it plays just as good.

Thanks Scott, for pinning this.

I'm pouring over ALL of Rick's photos and reports (he has done ALOT) and my wishlist just grows and grows. I'm ignoring most large game companies and looking out for what smaller outfits are doing.

Things I'm curious about:

Soccer Chess (Grapac).
A remake of Regista, a japanese made soccer game. This uses dice (not unlike street soccer) and seems really tactical. Even has offside traps, etc. 2 sided board for both Indoor and Outdoor play. Wonder if Cwali was inspired by this game...

Antike (Eggert Spiele)
An empire building game that runs 90-120 mins? Count me in. Pre-ordered a copy. The rules can now be downloaded.

Taxi in the City (Diceboxx)
Nothing about this game at all but Rick's photo makes it look like a sprawling game. Innovative packaging though. Lots of dice in the photo alarms me.

I don't think Shear Panic needs another plug. Their 'marketing' has been so successful. Geeklist contest, prize giveaway on The Dice Tower show = sold out. Amazing. We can take a leaf from their book. A little too cute for me though.

Jenseits von Theben is another must buy. So much so that I plunked down money for 2 copies.

Freya's Folly (Sagacity)
Aussie Don Bone of Sunda to Sahul fame makes another game. Yay. It looks really well made. Sadly, Don has informed me that copies will not hit Australia till Christmas or even after...Arh! Kinda daft to get an Aussie made game from Germany eh?

Another thing that surprised me: For those who give Settlers flak for using dice, a set of 36 event cards have been released to 'replace' the dice. Not much information out there but I'm keen to see if it mitigates the so-called 'randomness' factor.

There are alot of surprises that I previously didn't know about: Dirk Henn's Timbuktu gets a nice makeover by Queen. Also 2 tile laying connection games by Queen; one by Rudiger Dorn.

What else? Arrrghh so many games.

The ships are like Pirates of Spanish Main ones. There are assembly instructions in the rules that can be found on the Amigo website.

The tiles in Mesopotamia seem a little hard to disconnect. Nice though.

Must...not...go into...gaming system overload...

True, this isn't a great year, not like last year, but it also isn't a particularly bad year.

I'm interested in Gemblo to have placed a group order with the manufacturer for 16 copies and I'm interested in Antike enough to have placed a group order with the publisher for four copies along with a copy of Die Dolmengotter. Other games that I've got my eye on enclude: Indonesia, KaiVai, Atta Ants Exp II, Daimyo, Age of Steam maps, China expansion, 6 Nimmt! expansion, etc.Again, not a great year, but certainly not a terrible year.

Wish there was some more about the two new Queen games, they intrigue me. Not heard any early news of them, so it would be nice to get some rules, etc about them like some of the others that have already been released.

-Edit-

I read the blog you got this from - the blog writer got 5 for himself he will use as prices.
