Yes! I play the game with my 6 and 9 year old... While I have to help them out every once and a while, they'll get the hang of it if you have patience...

Although I have to warn you, you'll have to "throw a game" (aka purposely lose) every now and then to keep them wanting to come back for more.

From a mechanics standpoint, the game could definitely be played by a child. There's nothing particularly complex about movement, taking actions, attacking, or defending. As long as you feel confident that your son won't inadvertently break one of the models, you should be good to go.
