Hi all

November means NaGaDeMon or National Game Design Month, a fab idea being organised by Nathan Russell.

Similar to NaNoWriMo, National Novel Writing Month, but for the discerning geek, NaGaDeMon has four simple rules:

1. Create the game in November
2. Finish the game in November
3. Play the game in November
4. Talk about your experiences

Simple huh? I had a go at this last year and it was a challenge, a steep learning curve, but most importantly for a beginner it was a chance to give game design a go. There's no winner as such, it's all about the enjoyment of trying.

For more info there is:

Nathan's website: http://nathanrussell.net/naga-demon/
Official website: http://nagademon.com/
Facebook page: http://www.facebook.com/groups/306441599433963/
Google+: https://plus.google.com/108179818587904957934/posts

There's also a hashtag on Twitter: #nagademon

So...is anyone game?

Cheers,
Chris

Having designed a game in 24 hours, a whole month seems fantastic to me. I'll probably give it a shot, although this semester has been distressingly busy.

These tips are actually surprisingly good for all board game design, especially the following (paraphrasing a bit):

1 Brag about how you will succeed. Because then you have to just to save face
1 If you get stuck, highlight it and move on.
1 Don't edit it until you are finished. Finish rules text first, try it, then modify it. (I am so guilty of editing before being done).
1 Aim for finished but not perfect.

Yup I think that's some sage advice on the NaGaDeMon website, especially given the time constraints. There's just no time for designer's block or perfectionsim.

The website has been updated by the way and is looking really rather ace. There's lots of conversations going on about NaGaDeMon across the web(including here), and the updated website is linking to the conversations.

There's also a roll call for people to share their ambitions. I'm tinkering with the idea of a BGG blog to track and share my development. Has anyone found that useful in the past for design purposes, could share experiences?

I'm keeping a blog about my experiences. Be great to hear comments as the month progresses...

Anyone else got similar plans?

I'll probably serialize my experiences in an exciting series of articles on Troll in the Corner.

The biggest problem I have doing that is coming up with an exciting cliff hanger.

"So then I was torn between using a d10 or a d12! After a few minutes of deliberation I decided to go with...

Find out NEXT WEEK what our random game designer is going with! Will it be 10, 12 or something entirely out of the blue, like 8!"

If any NaGaDeMons are near London, UK on Sunday 18th November, please feel free to drop by the London Playtest meetup to have a friendly pint and get some playtest feedback.

Details here: www.meetup.com/Playtest (free to join)

Good luck with the challenge.

Is this different from June's NaGaDeMo? Because I made a game then.

It looks like NaGaDeMo in June is focused on video games. November's NaGaDeMon is more about tabletop gaming.

Yup. I would not recommend attempting both unless you are currently unemployed and not taking any college courses.

November is a busy month, as anyone who is in a choir will tell you!

I'm in three choirs.

And we're renovating our house. And I have a chronic illness which leaves me too tired to do much a good chunk of the time.

Shame, because I love the idea of this, and I have a game started which I need to bully myself into working on. Maybe I'll set myself a similar challenge after Christmas...

It was more focused on video games certainly, but in the FAQ this is the second entry:

Quote:
Can I make a board game?
Board games, card games, and other non-electronic games are fantastic ways to learn and iterate on game design. They’re harder to share with the wider world, but that shouldn’t stop you from making whatever you want to make.

So that's what I went for.

Room for both in any case, just curious if they were related or independent.

Challenge accepted. (employed, finished with college already, for now)

And I'll do one better. My NaNoWriMo novel will be related to my NaGaDeMo game.

And I'll do one better than THAT! I'll post a daily Youtube video chronicling my adventure.

I'll be doing it too. I'll probably even start a Geek Journal too.

With pictures!

I started my first blog ever; BGG or otherwise.
