A friend kindly gifted me King of Tokyo and the expansion, Power Up!, for Christmas. My family was all gathered for the holidays so there were no shortage of potential players, only willing ones. Fortunately, the colorful art, fun theme, and extremely easy rules roped two of my siblings into playing even if, normally, they're into videogames... but it isn't too hard to sell Rampage: Versus Mode.

The game was a breeze to teach and they grasped it instantly. My manual was missing two pages, so unfortunately, I thought it took 3 energy to clear the cards, not 2, but other than that there were no rules gaffes that I am aware of.

We played the "Controlled Evolution" variant in order to see more of the evolution cards.

Game 1:
P1 - King, P2 - Pandakai, P3 - Cyberbunny

P1 and P3 were evolving practically every turn while P2 was dealing lots of damage from his brief stints inside Tokyo. Ultimately, however, P1's King had a combination of Evolution cards (+1VP when attacking, +1VP when taking or holding Tokyo, the ability to force a monster to retreat) which allowed him to steal a victory without killing anyone. In the last turn, P1 was at 19 VP, 10HP, and outside of Tokyo. P2 was also outside of Tokyo... and Evac had already been played earlier in the game... so it was a bit odd going through the motions when no one could stop P1.

Game 2:
P1 - Pandakai, P2 - Mecha Dragon, P3 - Cyberbunny

Shrink Ray was face-up first round and so our early rounds were a race to hit six energy and avoid entering Tokyo (we actually managed a round and a half without claws). P3 got the shrink ray and immediately became a target, however, P3 shrunk P1 who wasn't able to get any hearts for two rounds and- shortly after- was killed by straight claw damage. P2 and P3 had a back and forth exchange, where it looked like P3 was fully set up to win having a the ray, something that lets you role saving hearts against damage, and an energy battery card... however, P2 just rolled enough damage to overcome it all and eek out a win with only a few more hitpoints than P3.

Very fast, light, fun game that they enjoyed despite themselves... maybe a little too random but that helps take the seriousness out of the competition and keep it light, I think.
