Ratings come from scoring games on 6 criteria, mostly scored /5, then adjusting for a combined score out of 10:
* Interesting Decisions - Quality of tactical and strategic decisions * Fun - Deeply subjective enjoyment of doing-game-things * Flow - Turn progression and engagement vs. down-time * Interactivity - Engagement with the system, other players, etc. The nature varies by game (solo vs. war vs. Euros), but how does the the dynamic game-state impose itself upon the player? * Tail - How much does the game/system allow for growth, discovery, progression, replayability, etc. * Presentation - Theme, components, design, rulebook, etc.
For each category, 5/5 means "I would recommend this game based on this factor", 4/5 means "Has good __," 3/5 is mediocre, 2/5 is bad, and 1/5 means "I would recommend against this game based on this."
I'm willing to give some games a 6/5 for "In the top few games at ___ that I've ever played." I would also score out of <5 if a category doesn't feel as relevant for a particular game.
