He first met Dettlaff van der Eretein as a customer of the young Bootblack in Beauclair, where they quickly became friends. One day he went with him to see the old mill. During the inspection of the building Dettlaff killed the Count by piercing his heart, then stuffed a bag of florens from different provinces of Nilfgaard down his throat before quartering his body and throwing the pieces into the river. Overcome by guilt for murdering a friend, Dettlaff then cut off the hand that pierced the Count's heart and threw it into the river.
The remains of the Count were noticed by the innkeeper at The Cockatrice, who called the guards.
