Surreal Software was an independent developer founded in 1995 and based in Seattle, Washington, USA. Surreal Software employed over 130 designers, artists, and programmers. They developed the Riot Engine for their games in 1996 and are best known for their game series The Suffering and Drakan.
In April 2004 Midway Games acquired Surreal Software as an in-house game studio. This was the only studio that kept its original name following its acquisition by Midway. In July 2009 Midway Games went bankrupt and Surreal Software was acquired by Warner Bros. Games. After a significant layoff in January 2011 the remaining Surreal Software employees were integrated into Warner Bros. Games Kirkland offices and the studio is now defunct.
